Your Local Budget pilot scheme - 8 December 2010

An initiative by the Big Society Network involves local councils giving control of some council spending to charities, community groups and local residents. The nine areas taking part have now been announced.

Charities, community groups and local residents will be given control over parts of local authority budgets in nine local areas under a pilot scheme being run by the Big Society Network and the National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts.

The areas taking part in the programme are:

• Norfolk County Council

• Stockport Metropolitan Borough Council

• Manton Community Alliance, in Nottinghamshire

• Herefordshire Association of Local Councils

• Dulverton Town Council, in Somerset

• Sheffield City Council

• Liverpool City Council

• London Borough of Tower Hamlets

• Royal Borough of Windsor & Maidenhead

Over the coming months, The Big Society Network and the National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts (NESTA), with support from the Participatory Budgeting Unit, will be working with these areas to develop new ways to involve local people in tough spending decisions, building on the pioneering approaches to Participatory Budgeting that have been developed around the world.
