It's tough being the Big Lottery Fund (BLF). You ought to be cherished, because you spend mountains of cash on good causes, all for the benefit of the community, but what happens?

You end up pleasing no one. Politicians, cabbies, Daily Mail leader writers, Guardianistas - all have their own fierce, often self-interested expectations of what the lottery gold should be spent on. Depending on who you turn to, BLF is a New Labour poodle, a pump-primer of loony-left causes, a populist conspiracy, or an elitist bureaucracy.
