Over £33 million in grants given to over 13,000 charities in Grassroots Grants' first year - 3 December 2009

Grassroots Grants, launched in September 2008, is designed to provide easier access to grants for small community and voluntary organisations.

Grassroots Grants could be given for a wide range of purposes, such as:

  • the purchase of new equipment;
  • community events and activities;
  • small scale training needs and staff costs.

Grassroots Grants includes a match fund, which gives donors the chance to increase the impact of their donations by up to 100%, through government match funding. A total of 8515 businesses and individuals up and down the country have made donations, totalling over £13 million so far, which the Government then matched funded. This has already built endowments in every local area, worth £25m in total.

The grants are administered at a local level by appointed funders, often Community Foundations. You can find your nearest Community Foundation using the Community Foundation Network website.
