Cabinet Office defends suspect sums - May 2007

The number of social enterprises in the UK could be as high as 215,000, rather than 55,000, the figure normally cited.

The 55,000 figure first came out a year ago as part of initial findings from the Annual Survey of Small Businesses 2005. It has been widely circulated by government and others as the definitive number.

But closer research into the analysis behind this figure has revealed that 160,000 social businesses may have been overlooked.
