UK told: 'end charities bias' - Tuesday 11 July 2006

The European Commission has formally requested that the UK Government end what it describes as "discrimination" against foreign charities.

The executive body of the European Union (EU) says that the UK's policy of allowing tax relief for donations toBritish charities, but not for charities registered abroad, is in breach of EU laws.
"The rules of the internal market forbid discrimination of charities in other member states," said EU Taxation and Customs Commissioner Laszlo Kovacs. "Gifts to bona fide charities in other member states should get the same tax treatment as gifts made to domestic charities."
