Wilshire Council has produced a document titled 'Other Sources of Funding and Advice' with information for the voluntary sector within the district.

Area Grants

The five local authorities in Wiltshire merged in April 2009 to form a single unitary authority, Wiltshire Council, though there are still seperate hubs for each of the four areas. These are then split up into 13 Area Boards, these are each allocated a seperate pot of money to allocate.

Each Area Board has funding to support local community projects in the area. The grants are used in accordance with the Council’s community area grants policy. The grants budget can be used in three ways – community grants, digital literacy grants and Area Board (Councillor-led) projects.

The grants budget will only support capital projects.

Applicants are encouraged to discuss their project with Community Engagement Office/Community Area Manager before making an application. All applicants should use the Council’s online funding application system.

Further information can be found on the dedicated 'Community Grants Scheme' page and the 'Grants Criteria' can be downloaded here.

Many local authorities are now moving away from grant-making and beginning to use commissioning as a way to distribute funding to the third sector. Local commissioners can be difficult to find and identify, however NAVCA have created a guide that may help: 'Finding your Commissioner'

The information provided on these grant schemes is fairly easy to find under the A-Z search facility, but unfortunately there is no general support information for VCS groups and no specific voluntary sector unit page or voluntary sector contacts.

However, the information that is provided in relation to the funding programmes is up to date, comprehensive and includes all relevant supporting documents and contact details.

What is the DSC Funder Rating?

Our ratings are by no means a final verdict, just a starting point to begin discussions about the voluntary sector’s experience of government funders. We are inviting all subscribers to share their experiences and contribute to the DSC Funder Rating. If you can help, please email us at
