Schemes:

Essex Council has created a Voluntary Sector Funding Gateway designed as a 'one-stop-shop' for Voluntary and Community Sector groups, the Gateway provides a funding portal, 'Bravo', through which all information on voluntary sector funding can be accessed and all applications for funding can be made.

There are also links for external sources of funding, Essex Compact, Essex funding team and useful links for support and development organisations.

Cultural Funding

Essex Council administers operates two grants schemes to support local arts projects wih benefits to the local residents.

  • The Cultural Development Strategic Fund offers grants of £2,500 and above to support the cultural infrastructure of Essex. The scheme is open to cultural organisations of all types based in, or working in, the administrative boundaries of Essex County Council to undertake outcome-focused commissions meeting Essex County Council priorities.
  • The Culture in Essex Small Grants offer support to arts and culture projects within Essex (excluding Southend and Thurrock).
Deadlines fall on the 31 March and 31 October each year and awards of up to £2,500 are offered to projects which meet the schemes criteria.

For more information, please contact the Funding and Investment Team or visit the council's website.

Many local authorities are now moving away from grant-making and beginning to use commissioning as a way to distribute funding to the third sector. Local commissioners can be difficult to find and identify, however NAVCA have created a guide that may help: 'Finding your Commissioner'

Useful organisations:

Voluntary Sector Training

Essex Partnership

We recommend voluntary organisations to register with the ECC’s Bravo eSourcing website (see above) which although not tailored specifically for voluntary organisations is a good funding tool and lists a number of funding opportunities relevant to the voluntary sector.

There appears to be no central voluntary sector unit, and as a result, no generic 'small grants scheme' for voluntary sector groups.

What is the DSC Funder Rating?

We need your help

Our ratings are by no means a final verdict, just a starting point to begin discussions about the voluntary sector’s experience of government funders. We are inviting all subscribers to share their experiences and contribute to the DSC Funder Rating. If you can help, please email us at ratings@governmentfunding.org.uk.
