Grants and other types of funding are available to voluntary and community organisations, usually from local councils, the National Lottery and charitable trusts. This type of funding is generally project based and separate from sources of income that help with the day-to-day running of an organisation.

The North Yorkshire County Council administers "The Innovation Fund" which was launched in 2011. The fund has two distinct aims:

  • Support voluntary sector organisations to deliver outcome-focused services with demonstrable impact in communities
  • Provide high quality services that demonstrate value for money, in line with our priority areas

For more information, please visit the council's website or contact Stephen Harrison at or Janine Tranmer at

In order to other sources of funding, local organisations can browse the Voluntary and Community Sector Directory (VSC Directory) which is a fully searchable directory of voluntary and community organisations working throughout York and North Yorkshire. The VCS Directory is maintained by the North Yorkshire and York Forum in partnership with organisations in York and North Yorkshire. The organisations provide support and development advice to voluntary and community groups.

To contact the VSC directory, please use the e-form available on their website.

Many local authorities are now moving away from grant-making and beginning to use commissioning as a way to distribute funding to the third sector. Local commissioners can be difficult to find and identify, however NAVCA have created a guide that may help: 'Finding Your Commissioner'

North Yorkshire Council provides one designated funding scheme for voluntary sector groups, however this is advertised on the local strategic partnership website, rather than the local authority's website.

Plenty of information was also available on external funding, as well as information relating to the council's community strategy.

During our research we made contact with the council's Policy and Partnerships department, who were very helpful in dealing with our enquiry.

What is the DSC Funder Rating?

We need your help

Our ratings are by no means a final verdict, just a starting point to begin discussions about the voluntary sector’s experience of government funders. We are inviting all subscribers to share their experiences and contribute to the DSC Funder Rating. If you can help, please email us at
